Celestron Polarizing Filter Set 1.25 Details: Ambient daylight is normally comprised of multiple wavelengths of light, vibrating in multiple planes. The Eyepiece Polarizing Filter Set transmits only light moving along a specific plane, thereby increasing the contrast between surfaces with different planar transmissions. Generally, the polarization effect makes blue skies a deeper blue, eliminates surface reflections and helps reduce atmospheric haze. The Polarizing Filter Set is intended for visual use. Its particularly useful for reducing glare while observing the moon, double stars, the planets and terrestrial subjects - all without affecting the color of the object being observed. The Filter Set is comprised of two filters that thread into either the eyepiece or the filter adapter, which comes with the set. When one filter is used alone, you get 30% light transmission. When both filters are used together, you can vary the degree of transmission. By causing the amount of transmitted light to vary, the filters become, in effect, a continuously variable neutral density filter. At maximum density, the Polarizing Filter Set transmits only 5% of entering light.

When Apple set out to redesign the iBook G4 from the inside out, one of the key design goals was to create a lightweight notebook computer tough enough to stand up to the rigors of life on the go. Because, from the standpoint of a laptop, the inside of a backpack can be a rather bumpy place. And yet you shouldnt have to walk softly just because youre carrying the worlds most appealing notebook. So Apple made the iBooks sleek case out of impact-resistant polycarbonate plastic. That would ordinarily be sufficient to survive everyday use and abuse, but Apple took the idea of protection even further. Inside, a sturdy magnesium frame provides superior strength, while reducing the iBooks weight to well below that of other full-featured PC notebooks. Apple even rubber-mounted the hard disk drive for added bump tolerance, so you can store all of your digital goodies on your iBook and still enjoy peace of mind. Additionally, the iBook has no I/O doors, protruding elements - and no tray, either - to break or snap off when tucking it into a backpack or briefcase.

Following up on their S40, Canon's Powershot S45 offers the same aesthetically pleasing metallic chassis with the powerful innards to go along with it. With a 4 megapixel CCD, images taken with the S45 were deeply detailed and could be easily printed out at 8 by 11 and larger without any loss of resolution.

Although the 3x optical zoom is average for mid-range cameras and above, it still let us get in a bit closer to our subjects when snapping shots. Improving on the S40, the S45 now captures video clips--complete with audio--of up to three minutes in length (although you'll probably want a larger storage card than the 32 MB CF card the S45 ships with). There are also easy-to-use video playback and editing controls on the camera itself.

Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration. This lens is equipped with a rear focus system that minimizes the fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. Customer Review: The New B-2 Bomber Completes my Lens Arsenal
I have only had this lens for a few days and I feel that this is the lens that was missing in my arsenal. I will try to update my review in future, but here are my ten cents: - Heavy and huge but certainly handheld manageable - Fast autofocus, OS is great and excellent image quality - As expected requires a lot of light (tripod recommended for low lighting) - Solid built and its color makes reminds me of the B-2 Bomber - Nice hood - Comes with a durable case and 2 straps - Only 1 year warranty (why not 5 years) This is my 1st non-Nikon lens and I am very pleased by it. Its zoom ring rotates in anti-clockwise direction for zooming in which I found a bit odd, but may be this is a Sigma thing. So far, I am very impressed by it. I am considering getting 2x EX DG APO Tele Converter.
Customer Review: Great Lens!
I just received this lens and made a test shot I've made with other lenses. I took a shot of a satellite dish over a half a block away. Handheld. Magnifying it with Photoshop not only can I see the 'Dish Network' clearly, but magnifying a little more I can read the 'TM' underneath the logo. Clear as a bell. This lens is a vast improvement over the 170-500 model. I used that lens on a wildlife trip and had to jack up the ISO to 800-1600 to get decent shutter speeds and a clear picture. Unfortunately that introduced noise, really bad in some shots. The D300 is much better than the D200 in that regard, but the lens was pretty much unusable without a tripod. This lens will alleviate any of those problems. I usually buy Nikon lenses. This and the Sigma earlier models including the 170-500 (which I had to buy for a trip and now I'm selling) are the only lenses I could find that gave a substantial difference over the Nikon 70-300 VR. The Nikon 80-400 VR is $1,500 and focuses slowly, and you can pretty much just crop to achieve the 100mm difference (I tried it to be sure.) I'm looking forward to using this with a 1.4 teleconverter, you lose autofocus and 1 stop, can only go down to 100mm but get a 35mm equivalent of 1050mm! For only $160! The quality of the lens is very good. There is zero zoom creep. Autofocusing is fast, though just a tad off (a few pixels off on the 'TM' - could be the camera, and that can be adjusted.) Manual focusing is tricky with the tripod collar on, it blocks the focusing ring so either move your hand to the top, slide your hand in between the lens and collar, or take the collar off. I got perfect focus using the viewfinder indicator as a reference point. The finish is of high quality, but a little strange. The whole lens including the hood is coated in some kind of flat black matte textured finish, makes me think of a stealth bomber. I did a lot of research to find this lens, and was waiting for it since it's introduction 2 or more months ago. There is just no Nikon equivalent without buying a f/4 400mm with a TC-17 for about $5000 or so. If Nikon had a lens at 500-600mm for not too bad of a price hit I would have bought it. After playing with this lens just a little bit I'm glad I bought it. I'm fiercely loyal to Nikon, and it's arguably a better product, but I can afford to buy this lens 5 times over if it breaks, and it also saves the whole price of 2 photography workshops/tours. There will probably be a lot of testing and comparing of this lens. None of that matters to me as it passed the satellite dish test with flying colors, I didn't even know the TM was there before today.

An ebook is a book in electronic format. It is downloaded to a computer, PC, Mac, laptop, PDA or any other kind of computer, and is read on the screen. It can have numbered pages, table of contents, pictures and graphics, exactly like a printed book.
Ebooks offer many benefits and advantages, both for the reader, the author and the publisher, and this article shows some of them.

Spyware doctor is not creating the slowdown problem
This is my story and i'm sticking to it.

Got a really bad virus/trojan/spyware called the (xp antivirus 2008), google it. I had Mcafee running and up to date the whole time. It went right past it. Totally took over the browser. I have had these in the past, again that got past Mcafee and it was pretty easy to download a free spyware program like spybot etc and remove it. Not so with the one above. It got to the point where I could not get on the web to download any other programs to try to find and remove, please note, I tried 6 programs and none of them even found the culprit. Spybot, spyware sweeper, spyware terminator etc etc.

I went to Best Buy and bought the Spyware Doctor based on the PC mags recommendation, on sale for installed it and ran the scan. It found the problem in the short scan, after removing the bad items it found the computer immediately sped up and I knew it solved the issue, I then ran the full scan and it found it in a few more places. Spyware Doctor saved the day ! and a 0 bill for repairs.

I have the same slow down experiences described in the other reviews and have not yet resolved them. However, from what I have found the problem is Mcafee not Spyware Doctor. Mcafee and others like them have compatiblity problems that don't like other competeting spyware programs. Mcafee now wants to run a bleeping virus scan everytime I start the computer. Funny how it's doing that now but not when I was being attacked by XP Antivirus 2008. I am going to remove Mcafee and install a less intrusive virus scan. Please note from what I have read that this is a common problem with Norton, Mcafee and others. They don't want the competition and you can easily find a list of other spyware programs that they don't have compatibility with.

Ultimately you will need a program like Spyware doctor because the Mcafee's of the world don't always find the bad guys. Likewise you need them to do certain things the spyware programs don't. This layered effect to fight viruses, trojans, spyware etc is the way to go but they need to be compatible. So we have 15 reviews that want to blame Spyware Doctor but the real culprit is the compatibility with the main anti-virus program being used. Something that they themselves are creating because they don't want the competition. Good luck with XP Antivirus 2008 without Spyware Doctor.

Excellent device, but not without its flaws
These guys are a bit pricey (9.99 for the basic system), but not
inordinately so. I've seen a few on e-bay, but decided to get mine fro
Amazon. Kindles ship 2d business day, so it wasn't a long wait.

The unit came in a box which was designed to resemble a book. Amazon
probably could have saved some bucks there since you'll likely not use
that box again. Included in the box were the kindle, the notebook-like
cover, AC Power supply/charger, and the USB cable

When the unit ships, it is registered to you and your Kindle account (with
e-mail addresses) is set up.

Pull the plastic strip which masks the battery, plug it in to charge
and wait a couple of hours. Two hours does a full charge and that's
good for 7 days without Whispernet or 2 days with. I think the best
bet is to leave the WiFi interface off except when you need it.

I also ordered accessories for my Kindle. First was an 8 gb SD card.
Amazon says the unit handles 4 gb cards, but my 8gb card works fine and
there are folks who report that 16 gb works fine. The other accessory
was a clip on LED reading light. The Kindle is *not* backlit, so the
light could come in handy.

Reading the Kindle is pretty much like reading a book, except that the
Kindle is lighter. There are two buttons for next Page and one for
previous page. You select the item to read or a navigation menu using
a scroll button just below the window. When you re-open a document,
the Kindle returns to the place at which you stopped reading.

The unit can hold quite a bit of material. I can put my 1300 volume e-
library on my Kindle and still have 7 gb to spare. You can also store
MP3 files in the music folder and play them as you read. Generally, I
move my books to a network drive at home and mainly keep music in that
8gb SD card. When I read, I plug in the headphones and press Alt-P to
start the music.

A few Pros and Cons:

Pro - holds lots of material, more than you want to store on it.
Con - the home menu shows *all* of the books on the unit which are in
Kindle (.azw), mobi (.prc) and Text (.txt) format. Well, those which
have those extensions. If you have a large number of texts stored on
the Kindle, it is cumbersome to manage. The display ignores
directory/folder organization and just shows all the appropriate files.

Pro - plays MP3 files. Using a headphone, the sound is pretty clear.
With the 8gb card in place, I have 400 songs sitting in place.
Con - Through the built in speaker, the sound quality is not so good.
Con - The headphone jack is at the bottom of the unit, next to the
power and usb ports. If you are laid back a bit and are holding the
kindle on your body rather than holding it up, the headphone jack is in
the wrong place and the plug is going to see unnecessary wear and tear.
Con - No play lists and no way to skip or select a song. The unit
simply plays the songs at random.
Con - Why didn't Amazon list the keyboard shortcut to play music (Alt-P)
or the shortcut to skip a song (Alt-T)?

Pro - paging through a document is convenient with buttons on both sides
Con - The right side button is too easy to accidentally trigger.
Con - rapidly moving through a text without a bookmark can be a nuisance.

Pro - the notebook-like cover protects the Kindle and contains a tab
which latches the Kindle in place.
Con - the on/off switches for WiFi and Power are on the back of the
unit. You have to put your hand between the cover and the Kindle to
operate those switches. This can cause the unit to pop loose from the
cover. Then, when you're putting the unit back in place (really a
simple operation) that right-side "next page" button is exactly where
you need to grab the Kindle. You can move quite a few pages before you
realize you did that. I've found the placement of the on/off switches to
be a real irritant.

Pro - the screen is easy to read with black text on a light, almost
white background. You can vary text size for easier reading or, if you
wish, more text on the page.

Pro/con depending on the user - the screen flashes a bit when you flip
pages. It was annoying at first, until I realized that it was a good
thing to have a visual cue that the page had changed.

Pro - Easy file conversion.
Con - Content Manager is a little cumbersome - no surprise on such a unit.
To really move files about easily, hook up the Kindle to your PC and use
the PC's file management utilities to move and delete files.

Pro - Although this is not documented, you can get a sort-of GPS when using
Google Maps. It seems to be based on cell towers rather than the real GPS
system, so don't expect pinpoint accuracy - especially if there are tall
buildings around.

Pro/Con - Although you can load pictures and even do a slide show, that ability
is undocumented. Basically, you dump the files into a folder, do an Alt-Z,
and then open the folder as you would a book. Rendering of photos is pretty
much the quality you would expect of a low-res B/W screen.

There are quite a few texts out there (Amazon says more than 140,000 in
Kindle format). You usually pay .99 for a book at Amazon. This can
be a deal if the alternative is the hardback (29.95) version of the
book. You also get immediate delivery. Some individual stories are
listed - usually for a dollar or so. I suspect that the number of
individual stories inflates the total count of titles. You can read a
sample of the book without obligation to buy and then buy with a quick
click if you like what you saw.

There are some free e-text sites, such as University of Pennsylvania,
U of Virginia, Baen Books, Gutenberg, and Gutenberg Australia. Orwell
fans can get all of his books at Gutenberg.au. Quite a few of those
books on the "must read" lists are available at free sites.

Now, having said all that, I guess I should answer the question, "was
it a good value and would you buy it if you knew then what you know
now?" Yes, in a heartbeat. I think it's a big plus for me. I've
replaced several hundred dead tree editions with e-books - saving space,
and getting money for the books at the local used book store and found
the Kindle pretty easy to use and convenient to tote about.

Does what it says
I was a little worried after reading some of the reviews on this item, but I really needed something that could take a good getting wet and survive. Well, this will do that, and has done that for me.

First I want to talk about the picture quality. I found that as long as I don't try to take pictures indoors at night close up the picture is at least as good as my major name brand higher quality camera. I have taken pictures in rain, underwater, outdoors, indoors, in poorly lit places, in full sun and from a boat with no problems. Indoors in poor light with a flash close up was the only set of conditions that produced poor quality pictures for me. I will be using this mostly outdoors in the day time so no problem for me. I have a "good" camera for when conditions are ideal for not killing my camera.

This camera is small, light, easy to manage, easy to operate and really is waterproof.

Under things I could care less about, the video quality is just about acceptable and the audio is OK at best. I only tried this feature out because the camera could do it. My test will probably be the only time I ever use the video mode. If I want a digital video camera I will buy something made for that purpose, and if I decide to shoot video underwater, I would probably strip off the audio anyway.

The down side, the camera takes 2AAA batteries, so they run down fast. The batteries that came with the camera from the factory only lasted long enough to take a few test shots. I am now running rechargeable batteries and have taken about 40 photos with no flash and they still are holding the same charge.

Another problem I have seen is that the clock appears to get screwed up at midnight for some reason. I have reset the clock in the early AM and it worked fine all day, but it turns into a pumpkin at midnight. I want to use the camera for photoploting so I just have to make sure I reset the clock when I go out for the day, no big deal to me, I do this anyway when I am photoploting.

Bottom Line. It works underwater and wet, the batteries last all day for me, the clock will hold time all day once set in the AM. I like it, I use it and it works for what I want to do with it.

Huge power at your fingertips
When I bought my new PC about a year ago I knew that I wanted great sound for my 00 investment. After a lot of research I decided on the Bose Companion II Series II speakers. They sound great, and despite their high price tag, I was happy.

Still, this new high end PC had a 5.1 coax output that was going unused, and in all fairness, the Bose speakers I owned couldn't pump out any sound I would consider loud. So I did away with the Bose with the hope of rattling the walls and listening to movies in surround sound. Continuing with my "go big or not at all" attitude, I decided on the Logitech Z-5500.

First off, this is not a light system. It weighs 55 pounds (probably 50 of that is subwoofer) so this doesn't feel like some cheap toy. The UPS guy was happy when I signed off because I would imagine carrying this beast back to the truck would not be ideal in the 100 degree Virginia summer. So, the box is huge, but everything inside is well placed, and easy to figure out.

There are 4 identical satellite speakers with swiveling bases so you can wall mount them. The center channel is the same as the sattelites except it is on its side, but again the base moves for wall mounting. The sound is controlled by a sound dock with a large knob, and a few buttons that let you control settings and all that good stuff. The back has one input for coax digital, one for optical digital, and a direct 6 channel input. The side has an input for headphones, and one underneath for a headphone to headphone jack (for MP3 players and such).

Then there is the sub. This 50 pound monster is a 188 watt side firing sub that delivers rock solid bass. Now some reviews of "the house shaking" are a little extreme. If you set the right EQ and crank the volume, then yes, you will rattle your brain. Most of the time the sound is more conservative.

The Z-5500 sounds great and has tons of power. There is no lack of it. This system gets REALLY loud. It can hit a level of loud that makes conversation impossible and a level of loud that keeps the party going. For a lot of system, turning the volume to 50% is unrealistic because the more you turn it up, the more distortion and lack of power you get. That 50% is really more like %80 of the power you have. Not here. When you crank it up you realize that the Z-5500 will keep up with you. I fear to put it past 75% of the max volume for fear of the cops being called.

The quality of the sound is also very good. There is great separation from the speakers no matter what mode you are listening to. Movies with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound great. DTS even better. For music, there are Pro Logic II modes to create a fake 5.1 experience, on top of the standard stereo and quad sound (the rears playing the front mix). The only thing worth mentioning is that unless you have a great EQ for your computer, sometimes the bass and highs are a little too much. These are not the best sounding speakers I have ever heard, but they get really loud and sometimes the shock value alone of the sound they produce hides any disappointment in the full range.

So in short...

Pros -

- Way more power than you need at your desk. This is really nice for action movies or loud music. I am really amazed by the amount of sound you can put out with these speakers.
- Easy to control and set up. If you are interested in expensive 5.1 speakers for your computer than you probably won't find this to be anything over your head.
- Nice clean look to the package. The satellites are not huge, and the sound dock has a nice look to it with the light blue display.
- This can hook up to almost anything, making it a good solution for DVD players, or an Xbox 360, etc.
- The different audio modes are nice. Pro Logic II modes, Dolby Digital, DTS, etc.. You can really mix it all up here.

Cons -

- The sub is really big, and can limit where you can put this. On top of this, it is heavy, making hauling this system a little bit of a workout.
- The included remote is cheap and does not fit in with the quality of the build.

Overall -

Lots of power in a nice looking package. This system hooks up to a lot and sounds good doing it. I am happy with my purchase and offer a high recommendation.

This month we had the chance to check out the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300. A sleek model with a whopping 13.6 megapixel sensor, a Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with 3x zoom and nifty gadgets like face and smile detection, new dynamic range optimizer and image stabilization. Since the compact arena is a field where competition is fierce, it pays to shop around before you commit yourself to any camera in this class. The Sony DSC-W300 however, has proven to disserve a place on your shortlist. Make sure to checkout our Sony Cyber-shot W300 review.
