I know that people have had cervical cancer and never had an abnormal pap. My question is: How do I bring up the fact that I am suspicous of cervical cancer to my doctor without sounding like a drama queen? I have been experiencing alot of the symptoms associated with cervical cancer, and I have most of the risk factors. I have never had an abnormal pap, but Im worried that if something is wrong, were wasting time by waiting for one. Does anyone have any good advice? Has anyone ever been faced with this?.

fundraising and fundraising ideas you can branch off from to get you motivated.
Some organizations out there offer specific, specialized opportunities for groups to raise money through donating items in which donors may receive payment for their items at a fraction of the retail price or may donate them outright.  One fundraising and fundraising ideas that fits into this category is the donation of sports equipment to help support a local children’s after school program.  Another example is the donation of cell phones.  Support shelters, such as battered women shelters or halfway houses can then convert the phones for use by those involved in their program or residing in their shelter.
Food drives are another great way to raise donations.  They’re especially helpful for groups whose goal is to support those in the community living in poverty conditions by providing free meals and groceries as aid.  Check with local churches or grocery stores for sponsorship for this type of great program.
Auctions are another wonderful way to raise money for your charity.  Whether you hold them locally or online, you can easily accept many different types of donations from willing contributors, such as vacation packages, services from local businesses, antiques, other items, free meals, and the list goes on.  If you need a host for your online auctions, visit IDonateToCharity.org for information on how you can set up your auctions with zero upfront costs or membership fees!  You don’t even have to pay listing fees for your first 1000 items!  Sign up FREE now to enjoy the host of benefits available, all designed to assist non profits like you in reaching their ongoing fundraising goals.
Direct item sales, such as t-shirts, food treats, hats, tea towels, candles, catalog sales, or other items provide a great approach to fundraising.  Oftentimes, in this case, you’ll need to have some money upfront in order to purchase the items your charity wishes to sell.  With catalog sales, however, you can have people place and pay for their orders, initially, and use that money to then fulfill and deliver orders to recipients, keeping the profits for your charity.
Who doesn’t love a great meal?  Using food as fundraising and fundraising ideas to raise money is always a terrific way to boost donations.  Charitable banquets or dinners are one way to accomplish this.  You can also opt to hold a relaxed meal, such as a buffet-style meal, pizza party, public breakfast, barbeque, baked potato dinner, or other food-related event, in which you can invite the local community or select group of people to attend.  Simply charge a small participation fee at the door and welcome your guests.
You can also raise a ton of money by hosting a special activity in your area.  Gather your group members and put on a local charitable dance or game night.  Carnivals, tent events, contests, and games are all ideas that the public will love.  Providing a needed service for a donation, such as a car or dog wash, house cleaning, window washing, or other service is something that can also easily be put together with a few volunteers willing to offer their time and energy.
No matter what fundraising and fundraising ideas appeal to you and your organization, remember to charge on with enthusiasm and motivation, so you can get people inspired to participate.

When Greg passed away he left a lot of loose ends. One of those "ends" I had the ability to "tie up," but at the time I wasn't sure I wanted the responsibility. After many weeks of debate, I decided to do the wrong thing and not keep my nose out of it.

I knew this man better than most people did because we were able to confide secrets in one another without fear. I knew of one of his most recent involvements - a married woman. The involvement that eventually ended his marriage. An acquaintance of mine from many years ago.

Greg was no saint. Sinners didn't come much bigger and knowing this allowed me to keep my distance from him in a romantic sense, yet still be his good friend. Thank heavens. I joked with the Grammar Wizard about "dodging a bullet with that one." I was pleased they were able to meet one another when John was here in December. It was an odd, intense few moments.

Finding this woman wouldn't be impossible, but it would require me to make a few phone calls that I didn't want to make as they would stir a pot I wanted to leave settled. I didn't know whether she knew or not, so what I was doing could possibly be unnecessary and leave me once again visible to people I was fine with never hearing from again. Something told me to do it. My guess is that it was someone told me to do it.

I got up the courage and made the calls. It wasn't pleasant and now people have my phone number I'd rather didn't, but like I said, I felt like it was something I had to do. I asked that she contact me without giving reason, as I respect that she's still with her husband (as far as I knew). To my utter shock, my request was granted without hesitation and she phoned me later that night.

We knew each other from a "previous" life, so she wasn't hearing from a stranger. She had a feeling why I was calling and as I feared she was unaware of what happened. Not only did I have to tell her about his death, but I had to confirm that he couldn't keep his big mouth shut. I assured her that I'd known all along and I wouldn't break that confidence regardless of current situations. Our conversation was intense. She had some questions that I was able to answer and sadly my responses weren't what she wanted to hear. Their approaches to their relationship were polar opposite. He lied to her. A lot and often. She knew how he was and got involved anyway. I apologized for sharing such bad news with her. Making that call gave me closure. I said farewell. I thought.

While I was at work last night she phoned me twice with more questions. I didn't get the very long and detailed messages until it was too late to return her calls. I'm not sure how to approach this now. I'm no counselor and god knows I've been dealing with his death in my own complicated way - as his friend and as a mother to my son whose been watching his good friend deal with the death of a parent.

I don't know if I can clean up this mess for you my dear dead friend, but I'll do what I can. I still miss your sorry ass. A lot.

Digital mammography doesnt appear to be available in Canada yet, or at least I couldnt find any sources.
As you can see from the photograph below, there is a clear advantage to having mammograms digitally,  rather than the archaic way we currently have.  And if youve read from my About Me page, Ive had annual mammograms which didnt find the cancer thank goodness, it was painful, as I may never have found it otherwise.

Full blog post.

My parents are both Holocaust Survivors. My Israeli wife's Father was also a Holocaust Survivor. Our kids will be eligible for the Israeli army draft if they want to stay in Israel for longer than a few weeks when they are 18 years old. I applaud Regina using the pulpit of her celebrity to take a stand. It's easy to preach to the choir. When she bashed Bush and supported Obama, I didn't share her political views as much as many of her "BrumStix" forum members. But that's OK. When she stands up for Israel, the debate on BrumStix becomes charged. There was a call for moderators and an abundance of foul language thrown around.

We are all victims of our age. Some of us read about history, getting some angle of events. The debate raging on Regina's website shows how little we know, or care to acknowledge, about the world in general and the history of the Middle East in particular. Why talk about '67, or '48? How about 1048? Visit the ancient sea port at Cesaria and read the plaque at the entrance. It basically reads... "In 970 the Romans conquered the Jews here. In 1048 the Arabs repulsed the Romans. In 1130 the Christians retook the area. In 1210 the Arabs took the area. etc..." I shouldn't use quotes because I'm surely getting most of those dates wrong, but my point is that people who have trouble remembering the previous election cycle have trouble understanding the Historic nature of the conflict. It takes two sides to resolve an issue. The area from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea has been under many rulers at many times. Some people look at Jews as Unicorns. Not just for the horns, but because if there are Jews here today, than maybe there really was a David Goliath. Maybe there really was a parting of the Red Sea. Maybe there really is a connection between these people and this land. Furthermore, the clear majority of Israelis today embrace the concept of a two-state solution with land exchanges. The prevailing thought is that there is no partner ripe for this. Hamas was indeed elected to the PA parliament in a majority.

A week passes and Israel leaves Gaza, again, and surely not for the last time it would seem. A week passes and our faith in the Office of The President seems renewed, for now.

G-d bless Regina Spektor for speaking her mind, as she always does. If we can't get fired up about something so relevant to our existence as a Humanity, we are doomed to repeat these cycles of violence needlessly. "G-d grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

This is why Pioneers For A Cure wants Regina Spektor to sing "Eli, Eli" for the cancer charity of her choice. The song is also called "Halikha LeKesariya," transliterated from Hebrew it means " A Walk to Casaria." Written by Hanna Szenes, who was in Pre-1948, Nazi era Palestine, and went back to her native Hungary to help Jews escape the death camps, only to be captured and killed at a very young age of 23.

Not been a great day for me again today, as I'm still feeling really exhausted, and I'm sore as well, which always gets me down. So today, like many days in the past few years, I turned to the words (and music) of Praise You In This Storm by Casting Crowns.

I was sure by now God,
You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen", and it's still raining
As the thunder rolls I barely hear
You whisper through the rain "I'm with You"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
Every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I remember when
I stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry
You raised me up again
My strength is almost gone
How can I carry on
If I can't find You
As the thunder rolls I barely hear
You whisper through the rain "I'm with You"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away

I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
Every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm

I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from.

Is there a chance that we could induct the Great One Abraham Lincoln himself  into the Brotherhood of the Beast, posthumously?
I guess its obvious that I have been trying to come up with something original to write about for Presidents Day.  But I found it pretty darn hard to answer my own question, considering that nothing has ever been written about Lincolns prostate, if a Google search is any indication.  Actually, the whole idea of Lincoln even having a prostate sounds funny to me.  Its like dear husband said a few years ago, t PC start showing up like in the last 20 years or so? Never heard of it before.
Some historians speculate that President Lincoln did indeed have an undiagnosed illness toward the end of his life that was sapping his overall health.   One theory is that it was cancer.
Can we make a case that it might have been prostate cancer? I almost dont know where to begin to speculate.   So lets start with Lincolns diet.  The president was known to eat lots of fruits and nuts.  Nuts, especially walnuts, are supposed to be protective against PC.  But then, Mr. Lincoln, being a man of his time, also drank lots of milk, and some people think too much calcium is a risk factor.
Pres. Lincoln was a teetotaller, and you would think abstention would have had an overall protective effect on his health, cancer included.  But no,  just the other day I read that (moderate) alcohol consumption was shown not to be associated with an increased risk of PC.  But you can also make the case that the lack of alcohol in Mr. Lincolns diet (especially red wine) deprived him of  reservatrol, a neutriprotectant that is associated with lots of goodies, including a reduced incidence of prostate cancer.
Then there are the apostles of Vitamin D (self included), whose credo is that high levels of it in the bloodstream protect against prostate cancer.  Ideally that would involve a man working in the open air where he could get lots of sunlight.  You have to be outdoors to split rails (and Kentuckys pretty sunny), so I would give the former president a check for that.  Also, Lincoln spent many hours on the road as a country lawyer exposed to the elements, including sunlight.  But what about Lincoln as president?  Mrs. Lincoln complained that her husband had no time to take the fresh air, and so she arranged for the two of them to go on a daily carriage ride.  (Whatever Mrs. Lincoln said, Mr. Lincoln did.)  The question is, I suppose, did they get out of the carriage or just look out the window?
Then theres the touchy subject of sex, and the even touchier subject of masturbation.  Onea school of thought says that a high frequency of ejaculation by a man in his 20s (and 30s) might prevent prostate cancer later in life.  On the other hand, there are those that say celibacy is superior.  I am not going to speculate about the presidents sex life, except to say that he was married in his early 30s.  Lincoln did have some tempestuous relationships with lady friends before that, but I doubt those turned physical.
I would say the strongest nugget in the Lincoln Might Have Had Prostate Cancer stew is President Lincolns extraordinary height.  At 6, Lincoln stood eight inches taller than the average man of his time.  And researchers recently found a connection between height and prostate cancer. Only a few months ago, the British tabloids were blaring:
Tall Men At Increased Risk Of Prostate Cancer Development And Progression.
According to ScienceDaily.com (Sep. 3, 2008), researchers who reviewed 58 studies and conducted their own found that a mans height is a modest marker for risk of prostate cancer development, but is more strongly linked to progression of the cancer.

APRIL IS CANCER MONTH

APRIL IS CANCER MONTH!!
Their motto is: "The stuff you no longer need will help fund the cure for breast cancer". And what could be better than a yard sale to make that dream come true?

This April on TVO and getinvolved.ca we're featuring stories on cancer survivors and some of the innovative and exciting things they're doing to help others - and to help find a cure.

Like Rachael Smith who started Yard Sale for the Cure. It's an idea so effective, you have to ask yourself why no one thought of it before! Yard Sale for the Cure raises money for Breast Cancer research and treatment by holding a massive series of Yard Sales in selected neighbourhoods across Canada. In 2005, the inaugural event was held in the Toronto Beaches. It was a huge success, raised $45 000 and brought people together with a great sense of community and purpose. Now a growing number of people from across Canada are taking on this idea and Yard Sale for the Cure will be launched in markets across the country. To date Yard Sale for the Cure has raised over $450,000!!!!

The event is to be held Saturday May 30th this year - so you'll have plenty of time to prepare - and plenty of information to help you get going on Rachael's website Yard Sale For the Cure where you'll find information packages, kits and clear straightforward instructions on how to hold your own yard sale.

Yard Sale for the Cure will be widely publicized and advertised in each of the communities, so lots of people will be attracted to shop at your Yard Sale. In fact, in 2006, $3.2 million dollars of PR and over $200 thousand in free media was secured to help promote the one event. You can donate all or a portion of your proceeds to Yard Sale for the Cure and choose our national charity (The Canadian cancer Society) or a local treatment centre as the recipient of your donation. 100% of all donations are directed to the recipient charities.

Oh - and don't forget: you can also participate simply by shopping! Just look for the posters and pink balloons that will adorn all official "Yard Sales for the Cure".

In an effort to cook for childhood cancer cures, over twenty world-class chefs will come together in the City of Brotherly Love on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 for the Fourth Annual Great Chefs Event to benefit Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer. The event will once again be hosted at Osteria restaurant, 640 North Broad Street, under the tutelage of Marc Vetri, Jeff Benjamin, Jeff Michaud and their newly created Vetri Foundation for Children (VFFC). The Great Chefs Event will be the first event held under their newly formed VFFC, which will be used to support Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation and other child oriented charities.

Much like Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation which emerged from the front yard lemonade stand of cancer patient Alexandra Scott, The Great Chefs Event came from humble beginnings. What started out as a small tasting at the Restaurant School in Philadelphia, has grown into a nationally recognized event, with world-class chefs traveling from all corners of the country to cook for the over 500 attendees. The event allows those in attendance to walk around and mingle, while tasting all the fantastic fare the chefs have to offer. In 2009, the Great Chefs Event will include more chefs, and the addition of VIP tickets for those who wish to be treated to sit-down service. VIP tickets will be available for $400 each, while regular tickets are $250.

According to Liz Scott, Alexs mom, s Lemonade Stand Foundation is constantly amazed by the chefs participating in the annual event, especially the enthusiasm and dedication to the fight against childhood cancer that they embody.

Jeff Benjamin says, "The Great Chef's Event is the ideal venue for us to increase awareness of childhood cancer nationwide. The event allows to us to continue Alex's dream, taking important steps toward the cures we so desperately seek, one plate at a time."

Known as an event featuring small plates for big appetites, The Fourth Annual Great Chefs Event will once again feature Tom Colicchio, renowned chef and head judge on Bravos Top Chef; as well as several new famous faces including Michael Symon, former host of Dinner Impossible and Bobby Flay of The Food Network. Several of the other participating chefs are James Beard Award winners and nominees, including host chef Jeff Michaud of Osteria, Daniel Stern of Gayle/Rae Restaurant; Brad Spence of Vetri; Clark Fraiser Mark Gaier of Arrows/MC Perkins Cove/SummerWinter in Maine; and Paul Kahan of Blackbird/Avec in Chicago, among others.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet and greet all of the world-class chefs while enjoying their food and wine, all prepared in front of their eyes.

For information on how to become a sponsor, contact Cynthia Ellis at Alexs Lemonade Stand Foundation at (866) 333-1213.

THE memory of a brave Billingham fundraiser has boosted the coffers of the hospice where she spent her final days.
Mum-of-two Liz Wheatley, pictured, died in October aged just 43, after a courageous battle against breast cancer. After being diagnosed with the disease in September 2000, she set about fundraising for the breast unit at Stockton's University Hospital of North Tees.
Every year, her charity Pink Night grew and, by her untimely death, she had raised a staggering £10,500 for the unit. And even while she was in the Butterwick Hospice, Liz began co-ordinating plans for a prize draw.
Held on November 25, which would have been Liz's 44th birthday, the event at the Wynyard pub in Billingham raised a massive £6,000.

Out on a Limb: Life After Cancer: Romania

So, Romania... I was there for five days on a work trip, filming a piece for BBC's Inside Out about a charity in Yorkshire that sends artificial limbs out there where they're rebuilt and reused for people who would otherwise be unable to afford them.

We flew into Cluj in the north of the country very early in the morning and drove down to Targu Mures, an industrial city four hours away by car. The town centre itself was smart, clean, with a mix of Communist-era blocks of flats and older attractive monuments and brightly-coloured buildings. The rehabilitation centre we visited was also modern and well-equipped - not really what I was expecting from a country where Communism only ended in 1989.

But when we drove out to rural Romania we saw a different side to the country - where horses and carts are still used to travel about the unmade roads, and women wear traditional clothing of long skirts and headscarves. It's these people who can't afford healthcare insurance so if they're unlucky enough to lose a limb for whatever reason - they have to make do without an prosthetic limb. But thanks to this charitable scheme bringing second-hand limbs from abroad, some of them are able to get one for free.

The same charity also pays for nurses to visit poverty-stricken elderly people in their homes. They provide essential health and social care. We found one woman in her 80s living in an unheated hut in the corner of a graveyard. She had no running water and had to use a hole in the ground/toilet outside. There was no way she could afford to pay for a doctor, but at least she was regularly visited by a nurse.

What struck me most about the country was the extraordinary hospitality we were shown. Even though the old woman living in a hut in the cemetery had nothing in the way of material possessions, she still insisted we take a jar of homemade rosehip jam to thank us for visiting her.

The charity is called Jubilee Outreach Yorkshire, and is based in Shipley. You can find out more here.

Well, finally, the American Gaming Association is coming to their senses. A spokesperson expressed earlier this year that they may reconsider their stance on internet gambling, and now the CEO feels that online casino legislation may be back on the agenda for the upcoming administration.
This of course is mostly due to the amount of money that it could bring it, as Ive been repeating for nearly a year.
This was announced at this years Global Gaming Expo in Vegas to which the AGA plays a major role. This year was particularly memorable, as the AGA addressed its stance in internet gambling as positive.
The Expo hosted a 3-day conference program this year where many issues within the industry were discussed. One of the conference panels, entitled Ethics in Gaming: A Handbook for Casino Executives discussed the integrity of casino gambling, which rings true just as much for the online industry.
Integrity is perhaps the most important aspect of any gaming operation. From the games operation to the back of the house, casinos have nothing if they dont have integrity. During this session, attorneys, operators and manufacturers alike will explain why ethical behavior likely is more important in the casino industry than any other and how to ensure that all members of your organization adhere to company standards.
The most relevant panel, however, was called Online Access: Compliance and Internet Gaming, which featured Frank Catania. Catania embraced the idea of internet gambling some time ago, and has called for numerous studies of its advantages and disadvantages. The panel came together to discuss the following:
The success of Internet gaming will hinge on integrity issues that can only be solved by transparency. This session will focus on how compliance issues are dealt with in the iGaming industry, including how matters relating to licensing, money laundering, underage and problem gaming are tackled by online operators.

Again the holidays are coming up quickly and we all have people on our list who are difficult to shop for. Whether they dont want or need anything, theyre hard to please or fit theres always at least one.
Even though the economy is a mess right now I am trying to help the people that I know remember how fortunate we really are. If youre reading this odds are you have shelter, heat and electricity. You have clothes on your back and maybe even shoes on your feet.  You have a computer and internet and phone access.  You have the right to vote and pray and stand up for what you believe in.
Weve just finished an election cycle that has changed the history of our nation forever.  President-elect Obama has said that this is not change but the chance of change. He said Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today.
With that sentiment in mind I will be posting charities throughout the next several weeks. Some of these I have given to myself, others just look interesting.  If you have charities that should be added than please share them with me. If something speaks to your heart please listen to it and help leave the world a little bit better tomorrow than it is today.

s credit crisis; homelessness is on the rise, and it could take years before we see any real effects from the rescue plan that was recently signed into law. But take heart there are well-run organizations out there doing their part to provide relief for individuals facing foreclosure. These charities give families many options to keep a roof over their heads, ranging from temporary housing services, to counseling, to small business loans. You can get involved by supporting these critical housing services at a time when they are so desperately needed.

Dear Friends and Family:

Although I am yet to complete the 60 mile walk in November, I wanted to take a moment to thank you. If you are not aware, I have met my minimum $2200 fundraising goal and am slowing seeing more funds come in as the event approaches.

I would have never met this goal if it wasnt for your support and encouragement. Whether you donated money, merchandise for auctions and raffles or sales, gave your personal time, or purchased items for sale, you are the reason I am walking in November in the Phoenix Breast Cancer 3 Day. I walk with hope that your future is not touched by either yourself or a loved one being diagnosed Breast Cancer and to find a cure for those that have been.

If you would like to further support me or any other Phoenix Breast Cancer 3 Day participants, walkers or crew members, you can do so by writing a letter. The Breast Cancer 3 Day maintains a post office at each event site, where the participants can receive letters. I cant image what would be better then walking 20 miles and arriving at our tent for the night and have letters of encouragement, support or thanks waiting for us. If you would like to write a letter please review the information below.

Send letters to:
Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office
ATTN: INSERT NAME OF PARTICIPANT
Box 409
2040 S. Alma School Road, Suite 1
Chandler, AZ 85286-0987

Envelopes only, please. No boxes or large packages. Mail must be postmarked no later than November 4th in order to ensure delivery at the Breast Cancer 3-Day Camp Post Office.

With sincere thanks and appreciation.
