As a Cancer Sun with Pisces-rising, I know how to spot a fellow water sign in extreme overwhelm. There's a fretful look that says, "I need a long soak," as she goes into the latest drama. I know I will get eggs and tomatoes for this, but just be rational and objective for a second before you get all emotional about the deaths caused by cancer: Can people(and especially the celebrities) start to see that cancer of all sorts, are simply part of the life-cycle of all living things you have life force, you have something thats the opposite of it to keep the balance so the planet (we hope) doesnt get so overloaded that it start to implode. I understand the pain and sorrow of losing loved ones(I just lost my father last year), but as much as we want to believe it, cancer is not going to go away, no matter how much these celebrities or anyone want to declare war against it. As so many studies have shown that many cancers are caused by long term stress and long term exposure to toxins/environmental hazzards. As a nation, we need to put the resources and energy into re-creating a culture that values balanced family/personal lives, keeping the most precious life sustaining elements(air we breathe, water we drink) as clean as possible and reduce alchohol/tobaco abuses.

and as much as you dont want to look at the essense of death, it never stop its work. I dont know what you have to do to keep yourself from seeing truth about life and death, I hope you somehow learn to live with truth rather than denial.
I didnt say that we should stop the researches for treatments, and I didnt say that we should not do anything to save people from illnesses. heres the thing, these people and celebrities keep behaving as if cancer is something that can be caught and dragged away and cured for good and we will have lasting victory forever. No, as much as you want to believe it, theres always going to be some other kinds of cancer that would take lives. And even with the more curable ones, there are always going to be people who wont survive because of complicated reasons.

Glenn Oesterle has been a fixture in the little village of Southport for almost a quarter of a century, but his Village Hardware store had been in existence in some way, shape or form for 112 years.
On Saturday, he closed the store for good.
The mega-store competition is one of the reasons that Oesterle is forced to close, he said. "I can't blame people for shopping at The Home Depot or stores like that. The food stores now stock everything. I remember a lady who came in and told me of the time she had to buy three 9-volt batteries for her smoke detectors at 10 at night. She went to Walgreens and got them at $5.95 each. I sell them for $3.95 apiece. But she was able to get them at 10 at night."
The building that includes the hardware store, Switzers Pharmacy, the barber shop and the Fairfield Women's Exchange is owned by three parties brothers Jack and Gerry Ringle each own one-third and the estate of Harris Russell owns the other third.
Gerry Ringle, a pharmacist and co-owner of Switzers, too is saddened by the closing. "We are losing not only a hardware store but a friend."
According to interviews with various Southporters, the original Southport Hardware store was located on the harbor, where the Pequot Yacht Club now stands, and was moved to its present location in 1926 when the new post office was built. The building housed the pharmacy, the new Southport Post Office and Jessie Harris' Hardware Store.
According to The Packet, a publication of the Southport Conservancy, "Jessie Harris came to Southport in 1920 to take over the store from A C Bradley. The 60-year-old from Monessen, Pa., with his wife, Emily Belle Vanderbilt, had been in the hardware business for his entire life and wanted to settle and spend his final years running a store in Southport Village."
In the January issue of The Packet, a publication which traces the history of the village, John Payne writes, "As though he didn't have enough to deal with, Jesse Harris realized that he was renting a choice piece of property that was being viewed favorably by the Pequot Yacht Club.
"The store location on Harbor Road at the foot of Main Street was ideal for a new clubhouse. (Pequot Yacht Club clubhouse) The present clubhouse was small, located a short distance down the road on property owned by Mrs. Winthrop Perry. The Jelliff Block, including Harris' store, had been purchased earlier by the Wakeman Memorial trustees from the Charles E. Jelliff estate. At that time, it was understood that the trustees had no specific use for the property, but the purchase was deemed advisable "to protect the surrounding property from undesirable owners," according to the Feb. 20, 1926, issue of the Fairfield News. The trustees gave a 60-day option to the Pequot Yacht Club to decide if it wanted to acquire the property. If so, Harris would have to vacate the hardware store by April 14. At the urging of Commodore Johannes Schiott, the members of the Club voted on March 13 1926 to purchase the building."
The Village Hardware Store stands where Jessie Harris moved his business in April 1926.
The Packet goes on in great detail to tell the story of the life of the previous owners and employees. A later edition of The Packet will describe the store in its present state until the closing on Saturday.
According to George Russell of The Russell Agency and one of Harris Russell's three sons, "One of the employees of the store was Ned Russell. He was so impressed with his boss and the relationship they had was more that just employer and employee, he named his son Harris after his boss and mentor. Russell took over the store, keeping the Harris name and bought the business in 1938." The Russell family and the insurance agency also have been fixtures in Southport for years. The late Harris Russell was active in local politics and served on the Harbor Management Commission.
Former employee Dave Bell, who worked for Oesterle for almost 12 years, also is disturbed by the closing. "It's horrible," he said. "I don't know how else to put it. This is an end of an era. I don't think that anyone out there will realize what they have lost until they have a broken lamp and they realize that Home Depot is not going to fix it."
Bell, who now works for Westport Hardware, would stop in to see Oesterle every day on his way home. "Not being able to leave here and go and hang out with Glenn for 15 minutes or a half hour each day puts a hole in the pit of my stomach. I started at that store when I was 19 years old and I knew nothing about hardware. Glenn taught me an awful lot about retail and life in general."
Jill Kelly, lifelong resident who often was referred to as the "Mayor of Southport," also was dismayed when she learned the store closed. "It's the saddest commentary. Glenn is the nicest guy in the whole world and I truly wish we could have sustained that store. This is going to be a great loss to the village and the people of Southport. I never have heard anyone say an unkind word about Glenn."
Relating a personal encounter with Oesterle, Kelly told about the time she bought a broom from him. "I asked Glenn which broom to buy and he told me, 'This is the one my wife uses.' That is the best broom I've ever bought and every time I use it, I think of Glenn and I chuckle and say I know why your wife likes this broom; it's a fabulous broom."
Greg Peck, who owns and operates the Spic Span Market, has been in Southport since 1976 and continued with the compliments: "Glenn is a dear friend of mine and I'm going to miss him. We get together every night to talk about the day and I'm going to miss that."
Noting that the village will be without a hardware store, Peck added, "The store is also a little piece of the puzzle here in the village and it will be missed."
George Russell added, "Things were a lot better for the hardware store about seven years ago. Then the box stores came in and it became harder for Glenn. If they weren't there and people weren't going to them, it would be a lot better."
Another friend and associate of Oesterle's is Dave Heugenberg, who started by helping him build shelves when Oesterle first opened the store in 1985. "When Glenn first started, I would come in and help him organize the place. My schedule allowed for me to do that and we had a heck of a lot of laughs. I don't know what to say except that it breaks my heart. He is a good friend and I probably won't see him that much and I have a sore spot in my gut."
Oesterle originally was going to close the store at the end of January but said he had to do so earlier. "I have to do it. There is no way I am going to be able to box up all of the stock which is on these shelves and get them ready to move," he said on Friday. When asked to estimate the total number of items in the store, either at the end or in the better days, he responded, "I couldn't begin to tell you how many things are even here now. It's a lot!"
Jan Perry, who has volunteered at the Fairfield Women's Exchange for 45 years, added, "I'm crushed. I'm going to miss him so much. I'll miss him sitting out here on the bench having his cigarette. I'm going to miss the fact that he has always come into to the Exchange and fixed things for us. Can you imagine us ladies not having him right next door?"
Oesterle's wife, Margaret, has mixed emotions about the store closing and told the Fairfield Citizen, "It's sad to see the store close but wherever Glenn goes, I go. It will be nice to have him home more and not putting in those 70- and 80-hour weeks that he did down here.
"We are going to miss a lot of the friends that we made when he closes the door finally. But life goes on.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common form of skin cancer and frequently arises on the sun exposed skin of middle aged and elderly individuals. General risk factors associated with the disease are: age more than 50; male sex ; fair skin; location closer to the equator; history of prior non-melanoma skin cancer or human papilloma virus infection; high exposure to ultra violet light, chemical carcinogens and ionizing radiation; and chronic immuno-suppression or a scarring condition. A cumulative life time sun exposure and immuno-suppression are primarily believed to be the cause of this condition. A typical SCC lesion is a raised, pink-to-flesh-colored papule or plaque arising on sun exposed skin. Surgery, local chemotherapy, photo-dynamic therapy and radiation therapy are the standard line of treatment for this condition.
Low risk tumors are usually cured with appropriate surgical therapy; however there is a 40% risk of recurrence in such patients. In addition, high risk tumors are aggressive and spread to other parts of the body very fast. Ayurvedic medicines for SCC are indicated in such patients with a history of recurrence or of having high risk tumors. The aim of treatment is to treat the local tumor and prevent its spread to other parts of the body. Medicines used for this purpose are: Arogya-Vardhini, Gandhak-Rasayan, Triphala-Guggulu, Chandraprabha-Vati and Punarnavadi-Guggulu. Kanchnaar-Guggulu, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha and Chandraprabha-Vati are used in high doses to prevent the spread of the tumor.
Herbal medicines which act on the and dhatus (tissues) of the body are useful in the treatment of SCC. Indrayav (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Triphala (Three fruits), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Chirayta (Swertia chirata), Chandan (Santalum album), Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Gokshur ( Tribulus terrestris), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Sunthi (Zinziber officinalis), Marich (Piper nigrum), Pippali (Piper longum) and Punarnava (Boerhaavia diffusa) are useful in this condition.
Medicines like Suvarna-Parpati, Trivang-Bhasma, Suvarna-Raj-Vangeshwar-Ras, Abhrak-Bhasma, Heerak-Bhasma, Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Bala (Sida cordifolia), Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta), Samudrashosh (Argyreia speciosa), Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) and Suvarna-Bhasma are used to boost the immune status of the body and improve the therapeutic response of other medicines.

We have a RE agent who, when he was trying to set up a showing of our house, would break into phone conversations we were having on our clan phone (hard line). This happened 4 times. We DON'T have call waiting. This guy was too impatient for us to get off the phone. He even admitted on one occasion that he was listening to our conversations.

We use Vonage which goes through our computer and so we have no road to the "outside phone world" through a phone box or telephone pole. However, Vonage utilizes the existing jack system within the dwelling-place so that we're able to have a phone in most every room.

I called Vonage to ask how this could be happening and they said there must be a tap on the jack line but after gingerly investigating our phones and lines, I saw no evidence of a bug.

I know that there are access codes someone could use to do this but don't have much data re: this.

How does someone get use these protocol? Can these codes be traced back to the user?



You are under a misconception about your hardwire phone service. It isn't point to point hard flex. Iphone and Vonage use the internet to digitize the link and send packets of data via the internet from one place to another. Spammers do this duplicate same technique with email packets to collect email addresses to generate lists which are where all that trash you get comes from. Once the packets are out on the internet, ANYONE can (with the impound equipment and computers), effectively "listen in" on the packets as they are moved from server to server. There is no "tap" on the line as such since they are listening in at a nub on a trunk where servers communicate with each other, NOT on the copper wires which connect your house to the telephone company. Then, there is another method, compromising the telephone company "switch" which is what connects parts of the phone system. Your hard wire copper connects to a switch, which connects to other switches which at the end of the day connects to the hard wire copper going to your friend's house. These switches are computers which listen to the call lines for tones and packets which control how the switch deals with connections. A number of years ago, Cracker Jack included a shapeable whistle as a prize. It turned out this particular whistle generated the exact tone used by long rigidity switches to turn off the billing machine, which meant you could bypass the billing for long distance calls and only pay for indigenous service while making long distance calls. It gave a whole new meaning to whistling things up. Prior to this soft whistle, people with perfect pitch could do the same thing, and then there were blue (black, red, and other color) boxes which generated the tones which were exhausted into the mic portion of the phone handset. All of this was completely illegal of course. And now, the phone company has installed notch filters on your condensed wire connection between you and the switch to prevent that particular tone going anywhere from your house. However, switches interconnected do not have the filters, so the switches still use the predominance tones as before between themselves. The switch makes a record of ALL connections, so in theory, you could track back to the connection point which entered in protocol or tones which modified the operation of the switch. This all works seamlessly because we have made computers which are fast enough to make the changes in literal time and not interrupt the digitized voice packets. The bottom line is, your agent breaking in as you say, is unlikely to be legal. However, all you can do is carp to your service provider. It would help if you could tape record conversations and make note of the time, date, number called and such to assist your phone provider in tracking back to how the connection happened. To be legal yourself, as a private citizen, you want to tell people you speak to on the phone that the conversation is being recorded or you have to provide a beep tone at least every 15 briefly, which is why help centers tell you the call may be monitored for quality control or whatever so they can record the call you make to them legally. I do not know the precise mechanism used in this case, but to me, it seems from what I know of the law that may be illegal. Start recording everything and tell people you are doing so. Then, take the observations you collect to your phone service. Complain, and complain LOUDLY, and back up your complaint with the data you collect. Otherwise, you are tacitly accepting this bad custom.
